The Gunsmoke Bell Trophy Race

St Stephens’s day saw a fleet of 10 boats brave the severe cold weather to compete in the Gunsmoke Bell, kindly sponsored by Sammy Cohen. Despite the treacherous road conditions many crews made it to Kinsale.

Cork Second to Scoring Gate

Cork, Ireland, crossed the gate in second place to take two points, moving them up one place to fifth on the overall leader board and skipper, Richie Fearon, says its business as usual on board.

Cork crew rescued near Java.

The alarm was raised at 2000 GMT on Wednesday after the vessel struck a rock 200 miles north east of Java. The crew boarded life rafts and were picked up by two competing yachts. All of the sailors are now safe and their families have been informed.

ASM-Marine Frostbite Series 2010

The ASM-Marine Frostbite League at Kinsale Yacht Club got off to a flying start on Sunday in superb sailing conditions. Having lost the opening day’s racing the previous Sunday due to a lack of wind; the Race Committee lead by PRO Bruce Mathews were determined to make the most of the prevailing sunshine and a welcome moderate breeze.

Light and variable wind of between 8 knots down to zero made the racing very challenging for both the Race Committee and the Competitors. The first race of the day had the fleets beating towards James Fort.

The penultimate day of the ASM-Marine Frostbite Series at Kinsale Yacht Club, enjoyed the continuation of fine weather which recently has been a familiar feature this winter. As the competitors chipped ice from their boats, the Race Committee pondered the feasibility of racing in the forecasted wind strength of zero to four knots.

Burgee in Qingdao’s Olympic Sailing Museum

A Kinsale Yacht Club burgee was presented to and will be put on permanent display in Qingdao’s Olympic Sailing Museum as part of the Donation Ceremony of the Clipper Round the World Yacht Race. Kinsale will host the yachts for the first part of the Irish stopover in July.

The Kinsale Yacht Club March Cruiser League got under way on Sunday, kindly sponsored by Frank Godsell. A fleet of 13 boats braved the brisk south easterly wind. Tom O Sullivan as OOD set a short crisp course that blew away the winter cobwebs and despite the breezy conditions no damage was reported.

New Cork Skipper Revealed!

Hannah Jenner has been announced as the new skipper of Cork and will race the Challenge 67 into Kinsale in the Clipper 09-10 Round the World Yacht Race. A graduate of the Hamble School of Yachting she has racked up more than 130,000 miles and the stage from Cape Breton Island to Kinsale will be her tenth transatlantic crossing.

ISA 420 Youth National Champions: Cian O'Regan & Scott Flanigan

The Fastnet Marine Outdoor Education Centre, Schull was the venue for the ISA Youth Nationals & Junior Pathway Championship (and Selector #1 of the trials for the ISAF Youth Worlds). 151 sailors competed across six classes during the Championship (6th – 9th April), part of the ISA Olympic Programme.

Spring Series 2010

The Spring Series, sponsored by North Sails, continued on Sunday in unseasonably warm weather and light airs. Classes 0, 1 and 2 were on a windward leeward course looked after by principal race officer Alan Crosbie, while Jeanot Petch officiated the round the cans course for Classes 3, 4 and the White Sail fleet.

Doyle & Dunne A Class Success at Southern Championship

The Irish Muntihull Association Southern Championships took place in Royal Cork Yacht Club from 17th – 18th April. It marked the first event with a separate start for the single-hander A Cat class and Rob Doyle and Colm Dunne took the top two podium positions.

The Optimist Connaught Regional Championships were held at the Lough Derg Yacht Club in Dromineer last weekend, 29-30 May. The now welcome late start of 1pm allowed 152 sailors and their families travel on Saturday morning which in turn helps to keep the costs down.

A Busy Night in Kinsale

When Summerbird crossed the line at 06:17 this morning, only Gratifikation remains out there just 10 miles from the finish. Gratifikation is the smallest boat in the fleet. Being a GK29 and six inches shorter than the required size limit had to be granted special dispensation to race.

Just after 18.16 last night the first departures from Kinsale took place. Pheyesha-Racing was the first boat to depart on the leg to Castlebay, Barra and this morning the leaders are approaching Inis Mhic Aoibhleain.

The 41st edition of La Solitaire du Figaro, from 20th July to 22nd August, will no doubt be the most important solo sailing event of the summer. It has superb line-up and a racecourse covering 1,717 nautical miles, made up of a combination of short sprint legs and long marathon runs.

It has been announced that the Cork team will leave Canada two days prior to the rest of the fleet so that the IRC Handicap rules can be applied up front and it will be up to the chasing pack to overtake the Irish team.

Tension Mounts As Pressure Eases

As the miles tick down towards the Race 12 finish line at Kinsale, there has been no let up in speed and Cork’s crew are clearly anxious to be first to arrive. At 1800 hours she had a 105nm lead with 234 nm to the finish, an indication the highly competitive team has found their groove with their new boat they have nicknamed ‘Fatty’.

On perfect time, under clear skies and with a good northerly breeze of around 7/8 knots the 45 boats strong fleet crossed the starting line from Gijón to Brest. The Race Committee hoisted the individual recall flag as five skippers were over the line.

Le Cleac'h does it again!

On Friday August 6th at 2 hours 44 minutes and 40 seconds Armel Le Cléac’h crossed the finish line in front of the Moulin Blanc harbour, in Brest. It took Brit Air’s skipper 2 days, 44 minutes and 40 seconds to sail the 385 mile long leg from Gijón to Brest, at an average speed of 6.34 knots.

The Jury met in Brest this morning and imposed a two hour penalty on Yann Eliès skipper of Generali Europ Assistance and, as a consequence sees him tumble from second overall to nineteenth and the ranking, after two legs is Armel Le Cléac'h Brit Air , François Gabart Macif Skipper 2010 and Thomas Rouxel Crédit Mutuel de Bretagne.

Rock & Roll Start in Sprint to Kinsale!

Leg 3 of the Solitaire du Figaro left Brest today for a 349 miles long route bound for Kinsale. The start was hampered by the bulk of the fleet clustering the pin end of the line, causing individual recalls and several protest flags to be raised.

Le Cléac’h hat-trick?

Armel Le Cléac'h has taken control of the third stage, having been victorious in the previous two legs, and seems destined to lead the fleet into Kinsale tomorrow. As of 2300 hours tonight he is leading the fleet, averaging 7.2 knots and has 136.5 nm to the finish at Kinsale.

Young Adrien Hardy (Agir Recouvrement) crossed the line at 20:08:45, winning the third leg. He covered the 349 miles in 54 hours, 8 minute and 45 seconds at an average speed of 6.45 knots. He was followed by Yann Eliès (Generali -Europ Assistance) and Jean-Pierre Nicol (Bernard Controls).

No Change In Ranking Order

The jury met today to decide five different protests. Only two received a penalty: Eric Peron (Skipper Macif 2009) and Gildas Morvan (Cercle Vert) who got 1 and 2 minutes on the second leg time respectively. Both penalties were given for infringements to the class rules and do not affect the overall ranking.

Boats have been returning from the offshore race of the 2010 Rolex Commodores' Cup. With a 2.5x point co-efficient this race had the potential to provide a major upset in the results, but after four days of competition the Irish team hold an even more commanding lead, now up to 29.5 points.

The skipper of Brit Air crossed the finish line of the fourth leg between Kinsale and Cherbourg in first position, and with three stage wins, he wins the 41st Figaro. It took 2 days 6h and 30min at an average speed of 7.98 knots.

Another solid day for the Irish team, leaders since the opening day of the regatta last Sunday. Big boat, O’Leary’s Ker 39 Antix and small boat, Davies’ Corby 36 Roxy 6 both won their classes today while David Dwyer’s Marinerscove.ie posted a third. No other team was close to being as consistent.

Ireland has done it; after mounting multiple teams over almost four decades, so the Irish boats Antix, Marinerscove.ie and Roxy 6 today secured the Rolex Commodores' Cup for the Ireland.
