09 September, 2009

Kinsale Yacht Club duo Rob Lehane and Iarlaith Kennedy are 420 National Champions
having won through at the National Championships which were hosted by the
Royal Cork Yacht Club last weekend.

52 sailors launched enthusiastically on Saturday morning joined by 30 Feva sailors who were participating in the Feva Munster Championships.

Conscious of the adverse forecast for Sunday the PRO was keen to get 4 races in on Saturday. The breeze of 14-18 knots from the west remained reasonably steady allowing him to do so.
Day one finished with leaders Rob Lehane and Iarlaith Kennedy on joint
points with the ISAF girl duo Jane Butler and Jenny Andreasson, the boys
having secured two firsts and two thirds, the girls a first and three
seconds with one discard allowed.

Both gold and silver 420 fleets launched in upwards of 20 knots on
Sunday, the Fevas having been stood down. Two races were completed in
challenging conditions, the gold fleet reveling in the breeze, some of
the silver fleet keeping the rescue ribs busy. Lehane and Kennedy
went on to take the championship, the girls having to settle for

Kinsale's Cian O Regan along with Skerries crew Mark Boylan
secured 5th while Eoghan Cudmore and Sean Murphy were 12th having
suffered some gear failure on the first day. They were followed closely
by Sophie Scannell in 13th crewing for Dublin sailor Darren Burke and
Katie Gambier- Ross with Ali Dix 16th. Aodh Kennedy was 2nd in the
silver on his first outing in a 420, having survived a couple of
spectacular capsizes and a man overboard.

A great performance by KYC sailors given that the event was hotly
contested by some of the top youth sailors in Ireland!
