O’Regan/Flanigan achieve target at 420 UK Winter Championship

19 March, 2010

The 2010 Volvo Youth Sailing ISAF World Championship is expected to be record breaker with an expected entry of over 300 sailors representing more than 60 nations in Istanbul at the southern end of the Bosphorus Strait.

Finbarr accompanied the team and has sent this report;

“Thursday night was the scheduled departure on the maiden voyage of the MV Julia from Ringaskiddy to Swansea. As it was the maiden voyage from Cork Eric Geary suggested we leave the straps loose on the 420’s, just in case. Anyway three hours after leaving Cork, we were still looking at Roches point as the vessel had encountered engine difficulty. It was to be a long night, and having missed the tide in Swansea we didn’t disembark until 1.30pm on Friday. So much for a practice day before the event.

Saturday at Weymouth produced blue skies and a light breeze of 6-10 knots. In race one Cian and Scott were lucky to get another bite of the cherry as their enthusiasm scored them OCS only to see the race abandoned after a 180 degree wind shift. Next start settled the lads with a solid 4th in this very competitive 55 boat fleet. Race two saw Emma Geary and Niamh Connolly work themselves up to 2nd position only to be yellow flagged on the second run. Having to take a 720 in light conditions cost them dearly (finished 19th) with this close fleet pouring down on top of them. Race three found Cian and Scott again high on the line and this time the OCS stuck leaving no room for error on Sunday.

The weather on Sunday proved very tricky with the breeze ranging from 8-18 knots with plenty of opportunity. Laura and Louise had good consistency in all their racing which was to stand to them in calculating their final position. Cian and Scott had to dig deep after their OCS and rounded off the event with a credible 7th and 12th. .The event saw three boats set the prescribed ISA standard, Cian/Scott, Jane/Jenny and Laura/Louise.”

Final Results after six races (55 entries)

Having achieved a result in the top 40% of this nominated overseas event their focus is now firmly focused to the domestic trials; ISA Youth Nationals (6 – 9th April 2010) and Mitsubishi Youth Championship (1- 3rd May 2010). We shall follow their progress with anticipation as only 1 team in this double-handed class will qualify!

The preparation continues with ISA 420 Regional Training scheduled for Kinsale Yacht Club over the next 2 weekends.
