Doyle & Dunne A Class Success at Southern Championship
20 April, 2010
The Irish Muntihull Association Southern Championships took place in Royal Cork Yacht Club from 17 & 18 April. It marked the first event with a separate start for the single-hander A Cat class and Rob Doyle and Colm Dunne took the top two podium positions.
Glorious sunshine and variable breeze provided perfect conditions for the first event of the 2010 season, and what an event it was! The rust and volcanic ash were quickly shaken off with a challenging five races.
The single handed A Class fleet had a separate start for the first time in the Multihull calendar and this bonus was greatly appreciated by the fleet and brought race satisfaction to an all time high.
Rob Doyle took a convincing win at the first event of the season scoring five 1st places. Maneuverability on the start line was the key to winning the first beat and Rob Gill showed this as he hounded Doyle in the pre-starts and took the first beats with ease.
Places changed consistently amongst the A class fleet on the race course and nothing was ever to be taken for granted at the next mark, over the course of the weekend everyone had the opportunity to finish second to Rob Doyle and everyone did in at least one race.
Colm Dunne showed excellent boat speed and consistency at his first A Class event and was justly rewarded with 2nd overall.
