Optimist Trials

12 April, 2015

Micheal O'Suilleabhain struck at the right time to win the 2015 Trials and bring the Optimist trials clock back to Kinsale. The Optimist trials have just finished in RCYC and after 13 race series under guidance of RO Anthony O Leary.

Kinsale Yacht Clubs Micheal O'Suilleabhain wins the 60 boat series in a nail biting finish. He had to win the last race and have Harry Bell RNIYC back in 4th and Gemma Mc Dowell MYC outside the top 10 to clinch the title. This he achieved in remarkable style to take the title and go and represent Ireland at the Optimist Worlds this summer in Poland.

Kinsale YC sailors again punched way above their weight, with 5 sailors qualified to enter the trials they won 3 places on the Irish Worlds and European teams. Sarah Levie and Mikey Carroll go on to represent Ireland at the Europeans which will be held in Pwllehi Wales while Mikey’s younger brother David joins the U12 team for the UK Nationals. Jack O Sullivan in his 1st trials had a fantastic series and can only go from strength to strength.

At 13 years of age winning his 1st trials as a senior Micheal O'Suilleabhain can go on to attempt the elusive 3 in a row and surpass the double that KYC’s Cian O’ Regan achieved in 2006/07. Special thanks must go to the parents of these incredible sailors for organising coaching in a very structured manner under the guidance of home grown KYC club coaches Dara O Shea and Cian O Regan. We wish all the sailors the very best for the season ahead and will be keeping a close eye on their exploits both at home and abroad.

This is the fourth time Kinsale Yacht Club have won the Optimist trials in the last 10 years , 2006 and 2007 (Cian O Regan), 2008 (Katie Gambier Ross) and now 2015 (Micheal O'Suilleabhain). This is a remarkable achievement for a small club like Kinsale.

Well done to all !
