Race 3 of the Axiom Private Clients Spring Series brought a big breeze and a blue sky to Kinsale, with a lively south-westerly wind gusting up to 29 knots whipping up white horses and keeping crews on their toes.
Race Officer Michele Kennelly set the Division One spinnaker fleet on a testing 1.9-mile beat to a laid mark, while the white sail division made for Hake Head before both fleets danced their way around the cans to a finish at the harbour mark.
In IRC One, Nieulargo, sailed by Denis and Annamarie Murphy, stretched her legs in the fresh breeze and claimed a convincing win over the Jones Family’s Jelly Baby by over two minutes. In the Echo division, Conor Doyle’s Freya held off a strong challenge from the Carroll Brothers’ Chancer to take the top spot.
Class Two IRC delivered the closest racing of the day, with Kieran Kelleher’s Diamond edging out David Marchant’s Flyover by just 42 seconds. Echo results mirrored the battle, with Diamond again on top—this time by 57 seconds.
Meanwhile, in the white sail fleet, Alan Mulcahy’s Apache continued her winning streak with a third bullet in IRC, ahead of David Riome’s Valfreya. The Echo class delivered the day’s most dramatic finish, with Sam Cohen’s Gunsmoke beating Valfreya by a single second.
With the Spring Series heating up, all eyes now turn to next week’s racing.
