Sunday the 6th of April marked the 2nd set of races in the Axiom Private Clients Spring Series for Cruisers (Spinnakers) Class 1 and 2, and White Sails (WS) fleets.
Sailors welcomed blue skies and fresh conditions with the unusual southeasterly winds churning up an uncomfortable sea. As a result, the Race Officer (Michele Kennelly) favoured the calm waters and comfort of the harbour for the start, rather than offshore, as was the case the previous weekend.
The Race Officer, with the mark boats set a windward mark upwind of the Bulman buoy and she included a number of club marks on the course for both fleets.
The lumpy seas, combined with winter rustiness provided plenty of challenge for the cruiser fleet setting, gybing and dousing spinnakers. The racing was very competitive, as indicated by a protest in Class 1, which meant that the Class 1 cruiser presentation had to be postponed to next weekend. However, as we go to print, we learn that the Jones family on ‘Jelly Baby’ (J-122) for the second week running won cruisers IRC Class 1 and ‘Damacle’, skippered by Jan van de Puil (J-122) won cruisers Echo Class 1.
In Cruisers Class 2, David Marchant, skipper and his crew of Sigma 33 ‘Flyover’ won IRC and Echo.
The WS fleet start was after the cruiser fleet, with the over eager ‘Valfreya’, a Sigma 33 jumping the line and having to turn downwind, cross the line and re-start. Once again, for the second week running, Alan Mulcahy and his new crew on ‘Apache’ (Albin Express), showed a clean set of heels and won the WS on IRC and Echo.
Tom Roche, skipper of the competing ‘Meridian’ (Salona 45) and the Series sponsor presented the prizes in his own inimitable style, assisted by the Commodore, Tony Scannell.
We look forward to another great day’s racing on Sunday 13th of April 2025.
