A wave of excitement swept through Kinsale Yacht Club on April 4th as the launch of the Kildare Innovation Campus Sovereign’s Cup 2025 drew a crowd of dignitaries and sailing enthusiasts. Cllr. Joe Carroll, Mayor of the County of Cork, joined club officials and supporters to wish competitors “fair winds” ahead of this standout event in the Irish sailing calendar.
The speakers at the launch event were sponsor Allan Shine, CEO of Kildare Innovation Campus, Regatta Director Michael O’Sullivan, ICRA Commodore Denis Byrne, Cllr. Joe Carroll, Mayor of the County of Cork and KYC Commodore Anthony Scannell.
With 88 boats already entered and more expected, this year’s event promises to be better than ever. Kinsale’s postcard-perfect harbour and reputation for warm hospitality continue to attract top-tier talent from across the sailing spectrum.
The biennial regatta will also serve as host to the 2025 Irish Cruiser Racing Association (ICRA) National Championships, drawing even more competitive firepower to the line. Race Officer Anthony O’Leary will oversee proceedings on the water, where crews will face off across a variety of race formats, leveraging the dramatic backdrop of the Sovereign Islands and the Old Head of Kinsale.
Adding further spice to the mix is a proposed ‘all-in’ fleet race, a spectacle that could see every yacht take to the line together — a potential first for the Sovereign’s Cup and a test of tactical nous and seamanship.
Racing kicks off on Wednesday, 25 June, with a afternoon start designed to welcome visiting crews. The pace picks up with early starts on Thursday and Friday, maximising racing time before the event closes on Saturday, 28 June.
