The 2026 Irish Sailing Youth Nationals, held over Easter at Ballyholme Yacht Club in Co. Down, delivered a week of high-performance racing in some of the most demanding conditions seen in recent years.
Among those competing in Optimist Fleet were four sailors from Kinsale Yacht Club – Joe Kingston, Tom Kingston, Jamie Blennerhassett, and Síofra Buckley all of whom produced impressive performances across the four-day championship.
Conditions throughout the regatta tested sailors to their limits. Sunday proved particularly extreme, with wind speeds recorded at 41 knots on the racecourse between starts and sustained gusts regularly exceeding 33 knots. Earlier in the week, Thursday racing also pushed competitors hard, with winds gusting in excess of 30 knots alongside a persistent and punishing wind chill.
In such conditions, simply launching and completing races was an achievement in itself. Across the fleet, the standard of seamanship and boat handling was exceptional, reflecting the high level of preparation and resilience among Ireland’s top youth sailors.
The Kinsale Yacht Club quartet rose to the challenge admirably, demonstrating determination and skill in equal measure. Their performances were a credit not only to themselves but also to their club’s growing strength in Optimist sailing.
A standout moment came with the success of Síofra Buckley and Jamie Blennerhassett, who secured qualification for the Irish Development Team. They will go on to represent Team Ireland at the French Nationals this July – a significant milestone and recognition of their progress on the national stage.
The 2026 Youth Nationals will be remembered not just for its results, but for the sheer intensity of the conditions and the resilience shown by all competitors. For Kinsale Yacht Club, it marked a particularly positive chapter, highlighting both current achievement and future potential within its youth sailing programme.
