Saturday May 30th, seven boats slipped out of Kinsale straight into a heavy sou’wester and a short, spiteful sea. With a foul tide running, every mile was hard won, but the fleet had its heart set on Glandore, where Glandore Harbour Yacht Club were throwing open their season with the annual At Home Regatta BBQ.
The conditions never let up, yet every boat made landfall to a warm Glandore welcome. Thank you GHYC.
Two crews went head to head for the Perrott Trophy. After more than six hours at sea there was precious little between them. It was a fair measure of the skill and stamina aboard both.
Ashore, GHYC laid on a cracking BBQ and a lively prize giving before crews retired to Casey’s for some well earned hydration and the kind of storytelling that only follows a hard day on the water.
The weekend signed off in style with a glorious downwind leg home, the perfect reward for the slog west. It was a memorable run and a fine showing of the resilience, camaraderie and good humour that define our sailing community at Kinsale Yacht Club.
