The 704-nautical-mile Round Ireland Race left Wicklow at 2pm on Saturday into a light, tactical opening. Two of Kinsale’s offshore crews have already carved their way to the front of the fleet. With the leaders past the Fastnet and heading up the Atlantic coast, the provisional standings make for happy reading at home.
Loinnir Girl sailed by the Lough Ree and Kinsale combination of John Malone, Emmet Sheridan, Sam Hunt and Cian McCarthy, lies first in IRC Class 3 and second overall on corrected time.
Shindig raced double-handed by father and son Tony and Jack Kingston, sit third in IRC Two-Handed.
Keep an eye on Trevor Middleton’s Black Sheep as well, lying second in IRC Class 1 with Micheal O’Suilleabhain aboard.
Cian and Micheal come into the race in sharp form, fresh from 3rd place at the recent 1720 National Championships in Baltimore.
